Signed lower centre: Ph. Hackert f. - Inscribed at the top left: pres Fossombrone 1776.

A further drawing by Hackert from the Fossombrone area, both created during a two-month hike through Umbria in the summer of 1776, can be found in the Weimarer Klassik Foundation. Both sheets show the wooded banks of the Metauro River: "Together they document both a section of the river's course and the journey of the artist, who may have depicted himself here in the rider with a dog" (C. Nordhoff, op. cit.).
