Fritz von Uhde was influenced on his journey toward modernism by the Hungarian painter Mihály Munkácsy and by Max Liebermann. The sunny mood and the motif of the child in the present work allow it to be dated to the late 1890s. It could have been created in Percha on Lake Starnberg, where Uhde spent the summer months together with his daughters. Here he painted pictures such as “Two Girls in the Garden” or “In the Gazebo”, which, like this pastel, show a light and cheerful side to his oeuvre characterised by impressionism, as all his works were during these years.
