August von Wille

View of Beilstein with Soldiers by a Tavern

Oil on canvas. 100 x 85 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: A. von Wille 1883.

August von Wille, who studied with Schirmer at the Düsseldorf Academy as of 1847, finally settled in Düsseldorf in 1863. Several study trips took him to the Moselle, Thuringia and his old homeland of Hesse, where he discovered the majority of the motifs that make up his oeuvre, which was still heavily influenced by the Romantic movement. The artist painted many views of the small town of Beilstein on the Moselle. This large-format painting shows the tithe house built in the 16th century in the center, which is connected to the parish church on the left edge of the picture via flying buttresses. The figures that populate the work - soldiers and town dwellers - come from the 18th century, which puts the present work in the realm of historical genre painting.
