Vintage gelatin silver print. 14.9 x 10 cm. Laminated on studio cardboard, signed and dated in pencil below the image on the mount lower right.

The photograph shows the decoration and stage painter Johann Schmitt (1878-1955), who was active in Hamm/Westphalia in the twenties. August Sander included the studio portrait, which for him shows the sitter as a prototypical representative of his profession in Group II "The Skilled Tradesman" (subsection 'The Master Craftsman') of his opus 'People of the 20th Century'.
