Hugo Schmölz

Untitled (Lichtspiele des Westens, Cologne i.a.)
c. 1930

Album containing 7 vintage gelatin silver prints on chamois paper. From 16.5 x 20 cm (16.9 x 20.4 cm) to 22.2 x 16.3 cm (22.5 x 16.8 cm), both portrait and landscape formats. Each with photographer's stamp, therein inventory number in ink, on the verso. Mounted individually to album pages. In original linen album with owner's stamp on the back cover.

Four photographs show the prestigious Art Deco interior of the cinema ("Lichtspiele des Westens") on the Hohenzollernring in Cologne, built in 1927/28 by Cologne architects Carl Müller and Paul Schaefer. It was destroyed in 1941 and, after the war, it was rebuilt under the new name 'Rex am Ring'. Three photographs show the interior of the elegant house of an unidentified art collector. Probably it was built by Carl Müller as well, from whose possession this album originates.
