As a student of August Sander, Hans Schiff - a Cologne native of Jewish descent - came into contact with the Rhenish art scene of the 1920s and 30s, including the architecture of Neues Bauen. Due to the increasingly threatening situation in Germany the now independent photographer and his jewish wife were forced to emigrate in 1939, They arrived in the U.S. via London, where he worked as a photographer under the name John D. Schiff for museums, among others, and became known as a documentarian of the New York art scene.
The view into the light dome of the Disch house, with its radical view from below, testifies to the photographer's eye trained on the 'New Vision' photography.
