Bronze. Height 16.3 cm. Signed 'A. GAUL' on the plinth, foundry stamp "NOACK BERLIN" verso on side edge of plinth. - Light, golden brown patina.

The donkey, which the Gaul family had owned since 1907, had already served as the model for the artist’s “Eselei” (Gabler 158 ff.) of 1911. That same year, Gaul would develop a large version (Gabler 180) of the little figure of the donkey rider, for whom his son Peter had provided the model.
