A Tanba boxwood netsuke of a dragon inside a mikan. Mid-19th century

The head and body of a dragon are visible in the large openings of a mikan with torn skin, the scales of the body are carefully carved, the surface of the fruit's skin stippled and the veins on the upperside of the large leaf are rendered in ukibori. Signed Hidari Toyomasa (Naitō Toyomasa II, 1811-1883).
