A cast iron model of the Warwick vase

One of three known examples. Cast in several parts. H 52, W 80, upper D 58 cm.
Attributed to Royal Berlin Iron Foundry, around 1840, after a design and model by Wilhelm August Stilarsky.

The original Roman marble vase comes from the villa of Emperor Hadrian in Tivoli. Popularised by its prominent acquisition by the Earl of Warwick, numerous copies were made in the 19th century, mainly in cast iron. The vase model was offered in various sizes and patinations not only by the Royal Berlin Iron Foundry but also by the foundry in Gliwice and the Saynerhütte near Koblenz.

Illustration from "Vorbilder für Fabrikanten und Handwerker" (Designs for Manufacturers and Craftsmen), published by Christian Peter Wilhelm Beuth and Karl Friedrich Schinkel, as of 1821.

Provenance

Former Barth/Fischer collection.
