A Berlin KPM porcelain krater-form vase with rose garlands

Model no. 1005, Medicis/Rhedensche Sorte vase form, no. 2. Fired in two parts and screw mounted. Both sides decorated with festoons of various kinds of roses. The base with a gilded acanthus frieze and other Neoclassical foliate motifs, the lower section and rim with finely etched 'vermicelli' decor. Blue sceptre mark, brown imperial eagle mark, blue enamel planet mark. H 43 cm.
1823 - 32, model by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

The oldest rose garden in Prussia was planted on Pfaueninsel in around 1821. King Frederick William III commissioned his court gardener Peter Joseph Lenné to create the garden. It contained around 200 types of roses, 1100 of which were standard roses and 9000 shrub roses. It is possible that the motif on this krater vase is a reference to the famous rose garden.

Provenance

Formerly owned by the last Princess of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen.
