A 14k gold presentation snuff box from Prince Wilhelm of Prussia

Shallow rectangular box with a smooth hinged lid. Decorated on all faces with chased relief and guilloche. The lid and base with chequerboard pattern inset with circle and acanthus motifs, surrounded by moiré effect borders. The bulbous outer faces with braided acanthus tendrils on sablé ground. The lid engraved with the inscription "Zum Andenken Wilhelm Prinz von Preußen Bruder Sr. Majestaet des Koenigs am 22. October 1834". Hallmarks: Hanau marks and company mark "S & C" in a rhombus, fineness 585. With minor dents. 1.8 x 6.0 x 8.5 cm. Weight 82.60 g.

Prince William of Prussia (Berlin 1783 - ibid. 1851), the youngest brother of King Frederick William III, embarked on a military career and was Governor General of the Rhine provinces and the federal fortress of Mainz from 1824 to 1829. In 1834 he was appointed General of Cavalry and again Governor General of the Federal Fortress of Mainz.
