A bronze plaque with a portrait of Prince Heinrich

Cast bronze with golden brown patina. Oval plaque depicting the prince in profile wearing a breastplate with the Order of the Black Eagle. Engraved "TRÉCHARD. F." on the sleeve. H 15, W 12.3 cm. In a later but corresponding dark brown patinated laurel surround, H 19.4, W 14.5 cm.
Around 1789.

Thieme-Becker devotes a few lines to the French sculptor Tréchard, of whom we know neither his first name nor the dates of his life. He can be traced back to 1787 in Paris and made bronze medallions of famous philosophers, poets and historians. He may have fled to Germany and Berlin before the revolution and was commissioned to portray the Prussian prince, probably on the basis of recommendations.

Provenance

Private collection, Potsdam.
