The present landscape is thought to be an early work by Sebastian Vrancx. Little is known as yet about the artist's early period. According to Joost Vander Auwera, the figures were clearly painted by Vrancx. The work may have been painted before 1608 (written correspondence, 8th November 2023).

The painting features many fine details which already allude to the artist's later style. Vrancx primarily became well known for his depictions of battles and allegories of the months.
