Adriaen van Stalbemt

Rebecca and Eliezer at the fountain in a wooded landscape

Oil on copper. 38 x 46 cm.

The Antwerp painter Adriaen van Stalbemt designed this depiction from the Old Testament in the style of his teacher Jan Brueghel the Elder. In the episode, Isaac's servant Eliezer is instructed to seek out a wife for his master, whereupon he meets the young Rebecca, sent by God, at the well (Genesis 24-29). Van Stalbemt's scene takes place against a rich forest and an expansive landscape in the background, in contrast to the rather closed staging of his contemporary and role model Gillis van Coninxloo.
