Hans Horions

Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well

Oil on canvas (relined). 83 x 70 cm.
Signed and dated lower left: JHorions 1646 (JH conjoined).

To this day, more than a handful of his paintings cannot be traced. They are of astounding quality, such as Horion's most famous painting "Salomé dancing before King Herod" in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum. The present work, "Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well", is listed under the number 2497 in the RKD picture archive. Dated 1646, it is Horion's earliest work, followed by a drawing "Adoration of the Young Bacchus", dated 1647, in the Fondation Custodia, Paris (Coll. F. Lugt). Stylistically, Horion's small oeuvre is closely linked to Dutch classicism.
