Pieter Nason

Portrait of Pieter Pauw

Oil on panel. 70.1 x 56.3 cm.

Pieter Pauw was born in 1611 into an important patrician family in Amsterdam. He became captain of a regiment in the service of the state and was later made a Knight of the Order of St Michael. He was also a nobleman of the King of France. He died after a short but successful life in 1637.

There is also a very similar portrait of his brother, Michiel Pauw, Lord of Hoogersmildel. This portrait is signed Pieter Nason and dated 1647. It is now in the collection of the Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota (see RKD image archive. no. 130459). Both portraits are single portraits in oval format, each showing a different city in the background and with slight differences in the sitter's posture and clothing.

Provenance

Belgian private collection.
