Fritz Bamberger

English coast between Hastings and Brighton

Oil on canvas. 138 x 210 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: F. Bamberger 1851.

In November 1861 (p. 5), this painting was already described in the art magazine "Dioskuren", which was published in Berlin from 1856 to 1875, while it was still being created:
" ... Bamberger has two very extensive pictures in progress, moving in such large and broad forms that the in-depth study of the immortal Rottmann cannot be misjudged in them. One of Bamberger's pictures shows the "Coast of England near Brighton" in magnificent outlines. A thunderstorm roars over the old battlefield of Hastings, threatening to plunge the chalk cliffs of the shore into the raging sea. But part of the sky is still unclouded and the sunlight shimmers on individual stretches of the coast, which shines brilliantly towards us".
