Two Young Women in a Winter Landscape

Oil on canvas. 53 x 70.6 cm.
Signed lower right: B. Sychkov (in Cyrillic).

Fedot Vasilievich Sychkov, who came from a poor family from Mordovia, Russia, showed a talent for drawing at an early age and initially earned some money by painting portraits of the inhabitants of his hometown Kochealevo. The wish to study at an academy seemed unattainable, but Sychkov was lucky. He was commissioned by the Russian general and landowner Ivan Arapov to paint "The Foundation of the Arapovo Railway Station" in 1892. Afterwards, Arapov supported and encouraged the young man and made his education in Saint Petersburg possible. After graduating, Sykhov returned to his native Kochealevo.

There he devoted himself primarily to the painterly rendering of his compatriots. Sychkov's works are characterised by the cheerful exuberance of his figures. His winter landscapes in which the brilliant white of the snow contrasts with the colourful clothes of the inhabitants are particularly characteristic.

We would like to thank Prof Elena Nesterova for confirming the attribution of this painting to Fedot Vasilievich Sychkov.
