Typical of Pieter van Schaeyenborgh's style is the diagonal arrangement of the fish, with a large fish forming the centre of the picture around which the various other fish and objects, such as baskets and bowls, are arranged.
We would like to thank Dr Fred Meijer, Amsterdam, for confirming the attribution of this work on the basis of a photograph (written correspondence from 12th January 2023). He believes that the figure of the fishmonger was carried out by another artist.
