Jacob Duck

Guardroom with Soldiers and their Booty

Oil on panel. 49 x 35.5 cm.

Small groups of soldiers sharing a spoil, as in this depiction, formed part of Duck's regular repertoire from the years 1630-1660. In his early work, the Utrecht painter was inspired by Pieter Codde and he became the most important representative of small-figure genre paintings in his home city in the course of the 17th century.
