The painting bears the inscription "J. T. Blankhof 1662" on the barrel being moved by three men at the lower edge of the picture, which could indicate Jan Theunisz. Blanckerhoff (1628-1669). However, the work cannot be assigned to the oeuvre of the artist from Alkmaar, so that it is more likely to be a later addition than an original signature. The style of the painting is instead much closer to the works of the widely travelled painter Adrian van der Cabel.
