Heinrich Ambros Eckert trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and studied under Albrecht Adam and Peter von Hess, who also influenced his specialisation in rider and soldier scenes. His main work is considered to be his series "Sämtliche Truppenverbände Europas" (All the Troop Units of Europe) with around 800 lithographs, which was created between 1835 and 1840.
The present painting with horsemen and soldiers, which he painted ten years before and at the age of 21, is in the tradition of the Dutch Philips Wouwerman as well as his contemporary Heinrich Bürkel.
