Spanish Coastline between Murcia and Almeria

Oil on canvas. 51.5 x 83 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Fritz Bamberger 1868.

Fritz Bamberger was born in Würzburg on 17 October 1814. He studied at the Berlin Academy from 1828 under Wilhelm von Schadow, then under the marine painter Wilhelm Krause. From 1830 he was a pupil of Johann Georg Primavesi in Kassel. In 1832, he moved to Munich, where he received significant inspiration from Carl Rottmann. From Munich, Bamberger travelled to Spain several times. At the beginning of the 1960s, he met Count Schack in Munich, who bought seven Spanish landscapes from him. Among them was the monumental "View of Gibraltar" (100 x 147 cm), painted in 1863. It is considered the main work among Bamberger's Spanish landscapes and today belongs to the Bavarian State Painting Collections.
