Portrait of a Young Prince (Tsar Paul I?)

Oil on canvas (relined). 40 x 28.5 cm.

It is possible that the child depicted in the present work is the later Tsar Paul I of Russia (1754-1801) who ruled after his mother Catherine II from 1796 until his assassination in 1801. Paul was Duke of Holstein-Gottorf from 1762 to 1773, and this portrait was probably painted during this time. Comparable portraits of the young Paul have been painted by Fedor Rokotov (1735-1808) and Vigilius Eriksen (1722-1782).
