Friedrich II. of Hessen-Kassel (1720-1785), who was married to a daughter of King Georgs II. of Great Britain, was in 1741 investitured into the Order of the Garter. During his visit to Clemens August, archbishop of Cologne, in Neuhaus Castle in 1749 he converted to Catholicism. 1760 he succeeded his father Wilhelm VIII. as Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel.
Several versions of this portrait exist, of which the one in the Marburger Universitätsmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte, Marburg, is closest to this painting.
