Bertram Priestman, hardly known today, was a famous English portrait and landscape painter in his day. Since 1916, he was a member of the American Royal Academy and since 1923 of the Royal Academy in London. Numerous English and North American museums own works of him. Having had his works first shown in the Academy in London in 1889, his oeuvre gains in importance around 1910. His success before the First Word War owes to an exhibition at the Galerie Goupil in 1909 which showed paintings by Priestmann next to works by Corot, Degas and Boudin as well as to the acquisition of his painting “Outskirts of a Northern Town” (1911) by the “York Club of Toronto”.
