According to Mina Gregori, this painting is without doubt a work of excellent quality by Giacomo Francia. She compares it to a panel signed by the artist in the Galleria Estense in Modena, a Madonna with Saints in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin and an altar piece in the church of San Giovanni in Parma.
Very little is known about Giacomo´s life and work. He was the son of Franceso Francia, the leading painter in Bologna in the late 15th century. A number of alter pieces are known of, many of which were created jointly with his brother Giulio, whereby Giacomo as well as Giulio followed their father´s style. The work of Francesco as well as of Giulio and Giacomo are very closely related to the art of Perugino.
