Born in 1925 in Pécs, Hungary, into a wealthy family, János Szász first studied law. When the communist regime prevented him, due to his middle-class origin, from working as a lawyer, the jurist turned to his second passion and trained as a photographer. The years between 1960 and 1976 were his most productive. Besides remittance work for the city of Pécs which was primarily documentary, he created highly experimental images of the countryside and architectural views in which he went more abstract. The emphasis on graphical structures which also dominate the images on offer is typical for this work. In 2011 the recently rediscovered work of János Szász will be shown in the exhibition “Hungarian Masters of Photography” at the Royal Academy in London, alongside photographs from his more prominent fellow countrymen such as Robert Capa, André Kertész, Brassaï and Lászlo Moholy-Nagy.
