Charles Verlat

HOMMAGE TO THE QUEEN OF FLOWERS

Oil on canvas. 147 x 96 cm.
Charles Verlat pin. Anvers Anno 1884.

The painting entitled "Hommage a la Reine des Fleurs" is the central work among the floral still lifes of the Belgian painter. Charles Verlat, student of N. de Keyser in Antwerp and T. Couture in Paris, was a very successful artist not only in Belgium. In addition to animals in art, he also cultivated the art of historical painting. His major works on this subject are "The Occupation of Jerusalem by Gottfried. von Bouillon" in the Brussels Museum, and
"The Wedding at Kana" in Antwerp. A journey to the Orient undertaken in 1875 provided him with material for paintings showing Palestine life.
In 1869, Verlat was appointed professor at the Archducal-Saxon School of Art in Weimar, and a few years later as professor at the Antwerp Academy. He also was a teacher of Henry van de Velde.
