LANDSCAPE WITH THE RUINS OF A CASTLE

Oil on panel. 37 x 51 cm.

The landscape depicts the ruin of Brederode Castle, built in the 13th century by the Lords of Teylingen, and which would become the domaine of the Counts of Brederode. The picturesque ruin by a river was depicted by Hobbema in several versions, and also by other Dutch landscape painters of the 17th century, among them Jacob van Ruysdael. Very closely related to our painting is a version that is signed with monogramm (Broulhiet, No. 477) and a corresponding drawing. In both versions, the boat in the foreground is missing.
