Auction 1220 Decorative Arts on 17th and 19th May 2023

Silver, Porcelain, Faience and Furniture Museum-quality Objects

This season, the comprehensive and high-value offer is spread across two auction dates: On 17th May we see furniture, decorative arts, jewellery and watches offered for sale, and the silver, porcelain and faience on 19th May.

The highlight of the auction on 17th May is from the recently concluded exhibition in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum in Cologne: a museum-quality, richly decorated cabinet from the 17th century. Four reliefs depict scenes from the Susanna story from the Old Testament (lot 353, € 60/80,000).

A museum-worthy Fulda console table from the Collection de la Fondation des Suisses is attributed to the cabinetmaker Franz Adam Weber and has an estimate of € 10/15,000 (lot 393). A similar pair can be found in the Spiegelkabinet of the Fulda City Palace, whilst the collection of the Metropolitan Museum New York has a further console table with this extravagant architecture.

Two large and magnificently carved wall mirrors with candelabra arms, lot 394, were acquired in Pelham Galleries in London, then moved to the estate of Stephen C. Hilbers, and in 2007 went to auction in New York. The current estimate is € 30/50,000.

Every furniture auction at Lempertz features objects from the manufactory of Abraham and David Roentgen. Each partially veneered chair from a set of four by Adraham Roentgen has the effect of a sculpture (lot 401, € 30/40,000), and they also grace the catalogue cover of this auction. David Roentgen produced a guéridon in mahogany with a white marble top for the French market, carrying the rare stamp D. Roentgen (lot 405, € 30/40,000). A large mahogany casket is also from the time of David Roentgen (lot 404, € 12/14,000).

A further set of chairs, this time with four French empire chairs, was finished by the ebeniste Pierre-Benôit Marcion for the Palais des Tuileries and bear the stamp of the inventory of the Royal Palaces and the Tuileries Palace (lot 419, € 9/12,000).

Magnificent French bronzes, numerous candelabras and large mantel clocks await interested bidders, including an important large pair of three-armed sconces attributed to the Parisian atelier of Jean Claude Duplessis of around 1750-60 (lot 395, € 15/20,000).

An impressive large mantel clock with a seated portrait of Cicero is signed by Pierre-Philippe Thomire (lot 416, € 20/25,000).

After the great success of the Autumn Auction, the second part of the porcelain from a private Westphalian collection will be auctioned on 19th May. Amongst the numerous beautiful and rare pieces of Meissen are a pair of bullfinches, models by Johann Joachim Kaendler, 1747 (lot 819, € 6/8,000), and a pair of mid-sized parrots, also modelled by Kaendler (lot 817, € 8/10,000). A rare chinoiserie garden pavilion with two figures (lot 821, € 6/8,000), will appeal to lovers of Frankenthal porcelain, with the model by Carl Gottlieb Lück.

An Augustus Rex vase with a rare lilac ground and two chinoiserie scenes documents the combination of the decorative concepts of Johann Gregorius Hoeroldt and Johann Ehrenfried Stadler from the period of 1726-30 (lot 878, € 18/20,000).

Circa 80 lots of faience from the manufactories of Proskau/Prószków, Holitsch/Holíč, Magdeburg and Nuremberg come from a Rhenish private collection, and feature rare moulded pieces and decorations. The highlight is a much exhibited and published Abstbessinger model oven painted by Johann Gottfried Kiel (lot 977, € 10/15,000). Also particularly unusual are seven Prószków musician jugs, (lots 998-1005), each with an estimate of € 2/3,000.
