Felice Boselli

Still Life with Fish Still Life with Birds

Oil on canvas (relined). Each 72 x 97 cm.

Felice Boselli was a highly productive and successful painter who almost exclusively specialised in still lifes. His style was strongly influenced by the naturalism of the Lombard school, which he got to know whilst in Milan. A similar manner of still life is found among the Flemish still life painters of the 16th century, such as Pieter Aertsen and Joachim Beuckelaer. The vividly coloured, pastose style of his later works with their shimmering reflections of light are reminiscent of the Neapolitan school. In his expertise of the present works, Prof. Arisi also praises the fine quality of the canvasses.
The present still lifes are typical of Boselli's style around 1720, in which the brushstrokes reflect his practiced hand and painterly force. The palette of this period was dominated by rich, earthy tones. A comparable, signed work is kept in the Pedriali collection in Forli.
Boselli's legacy is present in the work of his assistant Giovanni Crivelli, who copied these still lifes (cf. F. Arisi, Crivellone e Crivellino, Piacenza, 2004, p. 334-335).
