Berenice Abbott biography

Abbot studied at Ohio State University with the view to becoming a journalist. After a short stay in New York she moved to Paris, where she worked as Man Ray’s assistant from 1923-25. During this period she became interested in the work of Eugene Atget and henceforth purchased part of his estate and began promoting his work upon her return to the US. She started creating her own photographs after 1925, including works in a scientific context, as well as experimental pieces and portrait photographs of well-known artists and writers. One of her most outstanding projects was “Changing New York” (1935-1938), a documentation of the remodelling of New York made as part of the “Federal Arts Project” and partially funded by the US government.
