Jean Dufy - biography

After graduating from the Le Havre École des Beaux-Arts, Jean Dufy worked as a painter and designer for Limoges-based porcelain manufacturer Théodore Haviland Limoges (for example on the “Châteaux de France” series) and for a Lyon-based textiles manufacturer. At the same time, he continued to create oil paintings, as well as many watercolours and ink drawings featuring still-lifes and society scenes. With Paris as his main home, the city is one of the predominant subjects in his painting, which is marked by cheerful and radiant colours. In 1937, he assisted his brother, the painter Raoul Dufy, in creating the monumental mural “La Fée Électricité” for the 1937 Paris World’s Fair.
