Alfred Eisenstaedt - biography

Alfred Eisenstaedt’s career began as a freelance photographer for the “Berliner Tagesblatt”. Due to his Jewish heritage, Eisenstaedt immigrated to the USA shortly after Hitler’s rise to power, where he mainly worked as a photojournalist for “Life” magazine. Eisenstaedt portrayed Marilyn Monroe and Marlene Dietrich, but also Benito Mussolini and Josef Goebbels, all with his 35mm camera, and all under natural light, as the artist was a supporter of “available light photography”. Despite the snapshot quality of his photographs, they all tell detailed stories.
