For this poster, Erich Heckel has taken up, with only slight modification, the motif from his famous woodcut “Portrait of a Man“, 1919 (Dube H 318). Referring to this work, Magdalena Moeller writes: “This work, in its constructed form and its subdued tonality, shows a detached, spiritualised Heckel, mellowed by suffering, looking back thoughtfully onto a time and a period of creativity that was a both a touchstone and a teacher for him. With the “Portrait of a Man,” a decisive epoch in Heckel's artistic work came to an end. The following 1920s led him to a new point of departure.” (from: Erich Heckel. Aquarelle, Zeichnungen, Druckgraphik aus dem Brücke-Museum Berlin, Munich 1991, p. 17).
