THE ADORATION OF THE CHILD

Oil on panel. 59 x 77 cm.

The infant Jesus, Mary and Joseph are depicted to the right of the composition in front of ruins with Renaissance style ornamentations and are accompanied by shepherds and adoring angels. In the background a landscape is depicted with the Annunciation to the Shepherds. To the left is the kneeling donor with his coat of arms along with St. Margaret and St. Gregory as his patron saint. The painting is dated "1527", lower left, and although formerly described as "High German" it is now considered to belong to the circle of the Cologne painter Nicholas Woensam.
