Upper Rhine-Region Probably late 15th century / c. 1580

BELLOWS WITH LIEBESGARTEN

Carved wood with leather, remains of polychromy. In high relief to the front of the bellows a so-called "Liebesgarten" or "Garden of Love", from contemporary prints of the second half of the 15th century. Depicted is a youth with sword and two courtly dressed ladies, a servant pours him wine. The handle depicts a naked boy with a shield. The lower part designed as a lion mask. The probably later reverse with shallow carved strapwork, the grotesque mask can be dated to c. 1580.
With minor wear. The cast outlet in the form of a dragon probably added in the 19th century. Total height 87 cm.
