This painting was created soon after Rauch's arrival in Rome where he established himself in 1841, following a ten-year stay in Moscow, and where he died six years later. Characteristic of his finely painted works is the brilliantly luminous palette. Unfortunately, due to the somewhat dirty condition of this impressive animal painting, this characteristic is not apparent.
