Hans Heinrich Georg Brandes

VIEW OF THE COLOSSEUM IN ROME

Oil on canvas. 76 x 99.5 cm.
HBrandes f (H and B ligated).

Heinrich Brandes was born in Brunswick and studied from 1823 to 1825 at the Munich Academy. From 1830 he spent two years in Italy before returning to Brunswick. Brandes was initially influenced by the art of the Nazarenes and later the possibilities of painting en plein air during the Biedermeier period. The present work is likey related to the painting that was seen in 1833 at the Brunswick Art Association and that C. Braun, in his "Short Report on this year's local Art Exhibition", described as being a "[...] view of the Colosseum in Rome, the foreground with picturesque trees and ancient fragments. The works by this artist reveal deeply thoughtful studies of the nature [...]. "(Quoted in Spies, op., p. 49). Another view of the Roman Colosseum on fire was in the Bavarian State Painting Collection, it was exhibited in 1931 at the Munich Glass Palace where it was destroyed in a fire.
