LANDSCAPE WITH SLEEPING SHEPHERDS AND THEIR HERD

Oil on canvas (relined). 56 x 76.5 cm.

In a letter to the previous owner from 23.6.1989, Dr. Hermann Jedding, Hamburg, rules out Philipp Peter Roos (Rosa da Tivoli) as the author of the present work, since "the (sleeping) shepherd shown here is too beautiful and fine". Instead, he places the painting closer to the Neapolitan painter Domenico Brandi (1683-1736), and compares it to two signed paintings by this artist in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
In the exhibition "Barock in Neapel. Gemälde der Neapolitanischen Schule des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts aus dem Bestand der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart" in the gallery of Kornwestheim, the painting was attributed to Jakob Roos (Giacomo Rosa, called Rosa di Napoli), the son of Rosa da Tivoli who was born in 1682, taught by his father and subsequently worked as an artist in Naples.

Provenance

From a Westphalian private collection.
