A PROBABLY FRENCH LIMESTONE CRUCIFIXION GROUP IN THE STYLE OF THE LATE 12TH CENTURY

Limestone (four pieces), France (?) probably late 19th century (in the style of the late 12th C.) (GR 2.001)
Wear with losses, the surfaces with signs of weathering.

A probably French limestone crucifixion group in the style of the late 12th century. Consisting of four parts (the lower part 79 x 98 x 20 cm, Christ's torso 75 x 47 x 15 cm, the Madonna's head 29 x 28 x 15 cm, the head of St. John 30 x 24 x 13 cm). The reverse flattened. Both the iconography and especially the style of the robes would be indicative of an origin in Provence in the late 12th century. However, the three separately worked attachments have more parallels in the art of Northern France around 1160/1180. These stylistic inconsistencies leave cause to doubt the older datings (Neil Stratford, London, in a letter to Gustav Rau 29.12.1987), making an origin in the late 19th century more plausible.
