AN EARLY 13TH CENTURY LIMOGES CAST COPPER CRUCIFIX

Copper, enamel, Limoges early 13th C. (GR 3.4.5)
An old crack to the lower edge, the enamel partially lost, with some wear. Height 19.5 cm, width 11.5 cm.

An early 13th century Limoges cast copper crucifix. Engraved, remains of gilding, enamel. A separately worked Corpus Christi crucified with four nails, the head raised and crowned and the sculptural depiction of the body enhanced with fine engraving. Mounted to a corresponding cross with inlaid coloured enamel, inscribed "IHS" to the terminal and engraved with the hand of God.
