AN OAK FIGURE OF A GRIEVING WOMAN, MECHELEN OR ANTWERP, CIRCA 1500

A grieving woman, oak, polychrome, Mechelen or Antwerp, circa 1500 (GR 2.037)
The front of the plinth and three fingers of the right hand replaced. Height 44 cm.

An oak figure of a grieving woman, Mechelen or Antwerp, circa 1500. The reverse flattened, the older polychromy presumably partially reworked. A figure of a woman standing in contrapposto, clothed in a long garment and bonnet, her hands raised and her head lowered in a gesture to be interpreted as one of mourning. The reverse of the statue bears two large holes for dowels and a cross-shaped mark, meaning that the figure probably originally formed part of a shrine, possibly as part of a depiction of Christ's Entombment.
