Although Louis Apol, a member of a Dutch family of artists, took part on the arctic expedition in 1880, his winter landscapes don't show storm-swept or dramatic snowy scenes. They are more marked by a calm, almost sombre atmosphere and convincing use of light. The soft mood of his snowy landscapes is further accentuated by the lack of figures.
