Saint James the Elder and the Demons of Hermogenes

According to legend, the magician Hermogenes sent his apprentice Philetus to James the Elder to convince him to renounce Christianity, but instead Philetus was converted. On hearing this, Hermogenes sent his demons to capture the Saint, but he repelled them. Saint James is depicted in the center of this work, accompanied by the young Philetus. Together they watch angels carrying out James´ orders to put the demons in chains. The panel probably originates from a series illustrating the legend of Hermogenes and can be placed stylistically in the circle of the Ulm painter Martin Schaffner (ca. 1478 - 1549).
