The Crucifixion

Tempera on wood. 58 x 42 cm.

The style of the figures in this crucifixion with its silhouetted outline is a typical example of the art of the Emilia Romagna and can be dated to around 1420/1430. Above the central depiction of Christ we see God the father and the pious pelican feeding its offspring with its own blood. The mourning Virgin and Saint John are shown in the trefoil ends of the horizontal beam, and the undermost end shows a bishop, possibly identifiable as Petronius, the patron saint of Bologna. We would like to thank Professor Gaudenz Freuler (Zurich) for his kind support in cataloguing this work.
