A probably German 12th century bronze dish with engraved depictions of knights.

With remains of gilding.. The dish is made of "tombak" bronze, which is copper mixed with a larger portion of tin, and belongs to a group of 11 similar dishes kept in various European collections, all of which have been published by Josepha Weitzmann-Fiedler (ibid.) in her seminal work on the subject. The centre is engraved with a six-pointed star surrounded by depictions of four knights dressed in chainmail, carrying shields and upraised swords, as well as four stylised palmtrees.
With minor wear and rubbing. Diameter 27 cm, height 5 cm.

Provenance

Found in Aachen in 1894 during the construction of a canal, from there passed on to the collection of Dr. Karl Schumacher, Aachen. - Henceforth through his descendants to the Brüls collection, Aachen. - Henceforth in family ownership.
