Probably Alpenländisch

A carved wooden group of Anna Selbdritt, 2nd half 13th century, probably Alpine.

The reverse flattened, with extensive remains of older polychromy. Saint Anne is shown seated on the left of a throne bench clothed in a veil and a long robe. She embraces her daughter Mary, who is seated on a plinth and holds the blessing Christ Child on her knee. In contrast to later Gothic versions of this theme, the figures are not depicted facing each other, but rather out towards the devotional beholder.
The right hand of Saint Anne probably an addition. Wear and losses to the plinth. Height 75 cm.

Provenance

Private collection, Westphalia.
