Probably Lower Rhine Region circa 1500

A large, Lower Rhenish oak figure of John the Baptist, made circa 1500.

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Minor remains of former polychromy.. A large figure of the Saint standing in contrapposto, accompanied by his attributes the book and the lamb of God. Beneath his cloak he wears the skin of an animal, the head of which can be seen at his feet. The face and hair of the figure are particularly finely carved, and the drapery of the cloak displays a well-balanced composition.
The right hand lost. The right foot and parts of the plinth it stands on possibly replaced. A crack to the lower right side. Mounted on a newer, wedge-shaped plinth. Height 117 cm.
